August ended with a Bang!
K had a 106F fever with belly pain, so a trip to the ER was in order (Urgent care was closed for the evening). After a multi hour wait (we got there at 8pm and got seen around midnight), they ran a bunch of tests and found an elevated white count. They ordered an MRI for probable appendicitis. Unfortunately, it came back inconclusive, so K would have to wait for the pediatric surgeon to arrive in the morning to evaluate her. That left it up to the peds dept to decide whether to leave her in the ER until mid-morning when he arrived from LA or admit her. They decided to admit her based on the elevated white count. She was officially admitted at 4am. We got to her room on the peds unit at about 5am.

A church in the area makes all the kids their own pillowcase to make the hospital a little friendlier. K's was Raggedy Ann and Andy. Mommy stayed with K through the entire hospital stay and owes her partner teacher in 7th grade science a big "THANK YOU!" for putting together emergency sub plans for two days.
BTW, it turned out to not be appendicitis. The surgeon ruled it out shortly after his arrival. Her white count came down on its own (no antibiotics), her fever came down, and her belly pain slowly ebbed over the next two days. The doctors had no explanation for what happened to her. They released her late Monday night although they did offer to keep her for observation through Tuesday. We are so fortunate that it was nothing major. By Wednesday, she was back to her cheerful, bubbly self.
When it Rains, it Pours
On Wednesday, Mommy's first day back at work after K's trip to the hospital, e fell off the play structure at daycare. He refused to put any weight on his leg that evening, so a trip to Urgent Care was in order. Daddy took him this time. They x-rayed him, ruled it a sprain, told us to let him take it easy and to follow his lead on how much he used it, etc and sent them home.
On Saturday, we got a call from the doctor he saw on Wednesday. The radiologist's report was in. e had a buckle fracture on his fibula that had been missed on Wednesday. We needed to take him back to Urgent Care immediately to have him casted. We took him back and he got a cam walker (there's a long story here if you want to hear it). That's the black thing on his right leg. He wears a croc on his left foot to keep him sort of even while walking.

It was quite the adventure trying to get the cam walker into the seats e likes at the salon.
UT Trip
Mommy, Auntie R, K, and e spent Labor Day weekend up in UT for Cousin L's baptism. It was a fun weekend, even if it was whirlwind trip

Disneyland 10K
Daddy had planned to go to UT with us, but he'd signed up in January to run the Disneyland 10K and there were no refunds, so Daddy stayed behind, but I'm sure he thought of us, just like we thought of him!

A New Family Member
Since Kona passed in May, we have been without a dog. This has been hard on everyone, but hearts need time to heal. Kona is deeply loved. She'd been with E for a long time and he wasn't ready to take on another dog yet. However, a few weeks ago, E decided he was ready to start looking, so we began combing through shelters, looking for a dog, approximately 1.5-2 years old, around 50lbs, active and loving, but not too active, a good family dog that the kids could play with, probably some sort of lab/shepherd mix.
Meet Takara
She's not exactly what we planned. While the shelter billed her as 1.5, she was obviously much younger. We guessed about 9 mths. Our vet says she's probably closer to 8 mths, so she's still got a lot of puppyhood left. She's already 52lbs and still has growing to do. She's also VERY active. She's a lab/Border Collie mix, so she's VERY intelligent. She's going to need to always have something to do. We're planning to enroll her in a recreational Dog Agility program once she finishes Basic Obedience. The kids adore her and she adores them. She loves playing fetch (definitely a "retriever"). She loves going for runs. She's picking up the things we're teaching her amazingly quick. She still has a LOT of manners to learn and gets over-excited at times, so she spends time in her crate to calm down (dogs need time-outs too)
When we got Takara from the Corona shelter, it was fairly obvious that she had a UTI, so her first outing was to the vet for a check-up. She was very curious, but wanted to stay close to E too. (She did, in fact have a UTI and is on an antibiotic now)

Auntie R got some new baby chicks on Friday. We had to come up and see them while they were still brand new!

(If you look closely, e still has his cam walker - on Friday, his buckle fracture was declared healed, and they wanted to remove the cam walker, but e refused to walk without it. They re-examined his x-rays and found a previously undiagnosed fracture in the growth plate in his ankle and referred him to orthopedics. He has to continue to wear the cam walker until ortho determines what they want to do about the fracture in the growth plate)

For most of the time, they played well together. Takara still needs to learn that playing is for outside and being calm is for inside. More manners to learn.

For a dog who is NOT food motivated, if you get her hungry enough, she'll do anything for a treat! (It was almost dinner time when this picture was taken, so since she'd been playing all day, she should be fairly hungry for dinner!)

K even wrote a note for Takara this morning. It said, "To Takara From K___ I love you" and was in a homemade envelope. Too cute!
