IFEP

Congrats to K.  As of the day she took the CELDT (7/25), she is the only Kinder student (who took the test) in our school district to pass as an IFEP (Initial Fluent English Proficient).

Her score on the reading part saved her.  She had to pass (with a score of 4/5) at least 3 of the 4 sections.  Many kids pass the speaking and listening sections, but most fail the reading and writing sections.  She passed Listening, Speaking, and Reading.  She only got a 3 on the Writing portion.

Do you see why I have a problem with this test?  In CA's attempt to be sure to catch all English learners, it catches nearly everyone who takes the test.  The only reason K passed was because she's already reading at a mid-1st grade level.  Why does a test given to kids BEFORE they start Kinder require them to be reading at a 1st grade level in order to pass it?!?!?!?!
